Steve Jobs and Apple: The timeline of Innovations

In a recent announcement that has taken the technology world by surprise, Apple has reported that Steve Jobs has resigned as its CEO. Now, he will serve Apple as the Chairman of the Board. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to support Apple with his exceptional insights and creativity.

Apple and Steve Jobs are leading the tech industry over the past three decades. Steve Job’s leadership and extraordinary vision has always guided Apple to become world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Apple has revolutionized the mobile business with iPhone, entertainment and media world with iPad and the music business with the iPod.

Let’s take an overview of Apple’s successful and unsuccessful product launches under Steve Jobs guidance.

Apple Lisa

Before Mac came into existence, there was Lisa, which released in 1983. Lisa and Macintosh had one thing in common that both used a graphical user interface. But, Lisa was not as successful as Mac is. Possible reason is Lisa’s high price, where Mac cost around $2500, while the Lisa cost nearly $10,000

iMac

Released in 1998, iMac exemplifies radical departure from other bulky computers of that era as it was a sleek all-in-one desktop equipped with all the necessary functionalities. Also, it didn’t have floppy drive, a sign of things to come perhaps. To the reader’s surprise, iMac is still alive as Apple’s flagship desktop Mac after almost thirteen years.

Mac OS X

After a long struggle to find a replacement for its aging Mac operating system, Apple launched its new operating platform, Apple OS X Lion in March 2001. It had a rocking start; Apple accounted over 1 million Lion sales on the first day of its release. OS X is a solid alternative to Windows with quick and feature rich operating system, but still it’s slow speed and little app support disappointed many users.

iPod

Apple’s incredible product, iPod has given new definition to musical world. With this launch, users started storing multiple albums in succession without having to lug around a heavy book of CDs. Remarkable iPod was certainly not the first MP3 player, but its small size, easy-to-use navigation wheel, and its large LCD screen made it a hit amongst consumers.

iPhone

The iPhone has taken the world by storm when it first released back in 2007. Blending proficiency and elegance into every product, iPhone has just changed the whole scenario of smartphone terrain. iPhone has become a showstopper for the whole world. It showed users that smartphones could work for more than just call making or checking emails. Smartphone could also be a music player, a gaming machine, and an Internet browser. The iPhone’s all-touch interface inspired numerous other handset makers to design similar devices. Till date, four generations of iPhone has been launched and iPhone 5 is rumored to launch this fall.

iPad

The iPad is perhaps the most heavily speculated Apple device of all times. From the day Apple has announced its launch, it has always been a centre of attraction for tech enthusiasts and for those who were looking for a perfect blend of entertainment and education. Apple’s iPad has truly set a standard for all the competitors. Following Apple’s footsteps, almost every biggies of tech industry has its own tablet or prepping to introduce. But, still Apple has a Numero Uno position in tablet industry.

App Store

The most important development of iTunes is Apple’s App Store, which offers over 500,000 thrilling apps to its users. As per statistics, upto July, 2011(16 months after the iPad launched), there are over 100,000 apps available at the App Store designed specifically for iPad alone. To the reader’s surprise, over 15,000,000,000 apps have been downloaded by different users upto July, 2011. By using Apple’s apps iPhone could be a personal assistant, an organizer, a set of encyclopedia volumes or a portable arcade.

With such interesting innovations leveraging Apple’s success to an extent where it surpassed Microsoft’s 20 years legacy, Steve Jobs is one person analyst considered, the showman Now, without Steve Jobs, it is difficult to say, whether Apple would be able to maintain the top position in tech world or not.

Market reviewers suggest Apple still has everything required to lead the tech industry like innovative products, marketing capabilities, and managers to dominate markets across the globe.
